Highlights from the 2007 Staffordshire Figure Association Conference

The Cape Codder Resort at Hyannis, Massachusetts, right in the heart of Cape Cod, was the site of the 2007 Conference.

We started with an informal get together and dinner where the early arrivers enjoyed renewing and making new friendships and discussing Staffordshire collecting adventures.

The next afternoon we went to see Greg Baecker's large and wonderful collection of both Early and Victorian Staffordshire as well as a magnificent collection of Sunderland jugs.

On Wednesday night we had a welcoming dinner where everyone had an enjoyable time meeting with others who are happily obsessed with Staffordshire figures.

Thursday morning the formal conference began. Myrna Scholkne gave a professional and highly informative slide presentation on her pearlware collection which we have seen part of in her recent, wonderful book.

Greg Baecker gave a talk about how his collection came to be and told of the delights of having knowledgeable people visit and see one's collecting endeavors.

Stephen Duckworth then talked about his continuing efforts in attributing sources for religious figures through the review of images in old bibles. Stephen showed some source material coupled with actual pieces from Elinor Penna's collection after lunch during the sale.

Bo Rose discussed his efforts to broaden Staffordshire awareness by promoting small local exhibits of one's collection as he does at a local theater.

Elections were then held and possible locations for the 2008 Conference were discussed.

Arnold and Barbara Berlin were elected Co-presidents. Elinor Penna was elected Secretary and Bo Rose was elected Treasurer. Greg and Linda Sarna volunteered to do a newsletter.

Tentative plans for next year's Conference were made with the Washington DC area picked for location, and September 11 to 14, 2008 were preferred as the dates, if possible.

We will post final details on www.staffordshire.org and send emails as soon as details become final.

After lunch was served the Show/Sale began. Nine dealers including Susan Biship, Sally and Wayne Perkins,Jane McClafferty, Jim and Elizabeth Dunn, David Boyer, Lynie and Monte Bourjaly, Rainey and Dick Kirchhoff, Chris Hagger, and Elinor Penna exhibited.

Buying and trading was heavy and seeing this sea of Staffordshire Figures with many rare examples would gladden the heart of any Staffordshire collector. Our Conferences probably present the largest groups of for sale figures presented anywhere.

A delightful dinner where Staffordshire conversations kept many up late followed.

On Friday we first visited The Osterville Historical Society which displayed Staffordshire Figures along with other historical objects.

Mr and Mrs Kip Smithers then opened their home and collection to us. The Smithers' extensive exceptional Staffordshire collection is surrounded by antique furniture and paintings and beautifully intergrated into their lovely home,.

The SFA clearly owes Elinor Penna a big thank you and congratulations for organizing a thoroughly enjoyable Conference.
